LODI – Two Lodi High football players came up with big plays when it was needed in the third quarter.
But three Chavez players had bigger plays in the fourth quarter, and that’s what decided the game.
That helped the visiting Titans to a 36-28 win over Lodi (1-1) on Friday at the Grape Bowl.
Chavez fullback George Romero-Robinson scored on a 29-yard run with 9:34 remaining in the game. Jonathan Quinonez booted the extra-point that tied the game at 28-28.
At 7:34, the Titans took the lead at 34-28 when Gonzalez found Malik Dominque, who found running room down the Titans’ sidelines for 22 yards. Chavez added its final score on a safety, when Lodi was called for intentional grounding with 6:36 left in the game for what would be the final score.
Lodi inside linebacker Larry McDowell picked off a pass from Chavez quarterback Giovanni Gonzalez with 7:25 left in the third quarter, returning it 30 yards for a touchdown to trim the Titans’ lead to 21-20. The Flames’ extra-point kick was blocked, but received new life when Chavez (2-1) was called for encroachment that gave the Flames another opportunity.
Lined up for the two-point conversion, Flames quarterback Logan Stout took the snap and ran the ball into the end zone that gave Lodi a 22-21 lead.
After its defense forced Chavez to punt the ball, Lodi got the ball back and marched down the field for the final touchdown. Stout upped the Flames’ lead to 28-21 on a 13-yard run, fighting off multiple Titan defenders as he twisted his way into the end zone with no time left in the quarter.
