The Ripon High girls soccer team is going to a Northern California Regional championship game. Aubree Pelon’s header late in Thursday’s game made sure of that.
Pelon scored in the 66th minute of play and No. 3 Ripon beat No. 2 Corning by a 3-2 final to advance past the CIF Division IV semifinals. Ariana Scholten and Devaney Dougherty also scored for the Indians (18-4-2).
Ripon will now play at 6 p.m. in Saturday’s championship, and the Indians will do so at home. No. 4 Lowell upset No. 1 University Prep 2-1 on Thursday, giving Ripon home-field advantage for the title match.
Scholten’s goal came seven minutes into the game, and Dougherty added a score later in the half to give Ripon a 2-0 lead at the break.
Corning came back quickly in the second half, though, with goals from Itzel Ramirez and Megan Ross within 10 minutes of post-intermission play.
Pelon’s goal served as the tie-breaker, and it secured Ripon’s chance to play for a regional championship.
