Twenty-eight games into the 2017-2018 season, the St. Mary’s High girls basketball team’s goal is exactly the same as it was 26 wins and two losses ago. The Rams want to be state champions.

On Sunday, the found out the latest path on their journey runs through Cardinal Newman.

Brackets for both state basketball and regional soccer playoffs were announced Sunday, with a healthy helping of area teams in the mix. After winning the Division I Sac-Joaquin Section championship on Saturday, St. Mary’s opens the state playoffs as a No. 2 seed hosting No. 7 Santa Rosa-Cardinal Newman at 7 p.m. Friday.

The Rams have recent history with Cardinal Newman. Last season, the Cardinals beat St. Mary’s 74-55, and Rams coach Tom Gonsalves expects a tough match up this time as well.

“They’re a worthy opponent, and it’s going to be a tough one,” Gonsalves. “From our perspective, we have to come out and take care of business. We have to worry about what we do.”

This kind of competition comes with the territory of playing in an open division, where other standouts like No. 1 San Jose-Archbishop Mitty and No. 3 Los Altos Hills-Pinewood lurk. But St. Mary’s has earned the right to play in this bracket, against these teams.

“All the players are on the same page, and they’re playing their butts off,” Gonsalves said. “We’re going to be a tough out for anybody.”
