STOCKTON — A 7-year-old girl was found dead Saturday at a home in north Stockton, police say.

Officers responded to a residence in the 1300 block of Candlewood Way at about 4:45 a.m. to conduct a welfare check of a child, Stockton police said. The girl was found unresponsive in the garage.

Medics responded to the scene and pronounced the girl dead.

Billey Williams, 30, was arrested on suspicion of homicide and assault on a child resulting in death, police said. Williams was the girl’s father.

Five other children were found inside the home and were taken into protective custody by Child Protective Services, Stockton police spokesman Officer Joe Silva said.

Williams is being held without bail at the San Joaquin County Jail and is scheduled to be in court Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. in Stockton, according to online jail records.

Charges against Williams include felony murder, assault on a child in his care or custody with great bodily injury and willful cruelty to a child resulting in injury or death, as well as a misdemeanor charge of battery, online jail records show.
