History: Read to Me, Stockton! began in 2011 to provide free books every month to children from birth to age 5 with the goal of preparing them for learning when they reach kindergarten. In partnership with the Imagination Library, more than 200,000 free books have been sent to Stockton children since 2011.

Mission: Read to Me, Stockton!’s mission is to prepare children for kindergarten by exposing them to books at an early age and encourage parents to read to their children daily. The only requirements for enrollment in Read to Me, Stockton! are living in a Stockton zip code and being under age 5. Early reading and language development are the keys to a child’s success in school, and currently more than 7,500 books are sent out each month. At a cost of $2 per book, the monthly book bill is more than $15,000.
