Man shot while walking

STOCKTON — A man was shot while walking about 7:15 p.m. Wednesday on American Street near Seventh Street, police reported.

The victim told police a black Ford SUV approached him and the rear driver-side passenger rolled down his window and got into an argument with him.

Police said the man then fired a shot at the victim, hitting him. The victim suffered a non-life-threatening injury and was taken to the hospital.

The shooter was described as a 20-year-old black man, 5 feet 8, 170 pounds and had a mustache.

Attempted homicide suspect turns himself in

STOCKTON — Damien Verrett, 22, turned himself in at the downtown Stockton police station late Wednesday and was charged with suspicion of attempted homicide in connection with Monday’s midafternoon shooting at the Mi Casa Apartments in north Stockton, police reported.

Verrett reportedly showed up at police headquarters about 5:15 p.m. of his own accord “and turned himself in for the shooting, which occurred in the 200 block of East Bianchi Road,” according to the report.

After being interviewed by detectives, he was arrested on suspicion of attempted homicide and gun charges. Verrett was booked into San Joaquin County Jail in French Camp, where he remains on no bail until his pending arraignment.

The male gunshot victim was transported to an area hospital following the 3:40 p.m. Monday shooting. On Thursday morning his condition was reported as critical but stable. Neighbors reported hearing arguing before the shooting began. No additional details have been provided by authorities.

Van flees after hitting 4-year-old girl

STOCKTON — Police are looking for the driver of a van that hit a 4-year-old girl and then left the scene.

Stockton police said the girl was on her bicycle when she was struck by a green or light blue older-model Chevrolet Astro van about 1:05 p.m. Thursday near Cleveland and California streets.

The driver of the van drove away from the crash going south on California Street, according to police.

The victim suffered major injuries and was taken to the hospital.

Police make second arrest in Lodi homicide

LODI — Detectives on Wednesday arrested a second suspect in connection with the homicide of a 31-year-old Lodi man.

Lodi police officers, with help from the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office and the California Highway Patrol, arrested Steven Vallejo, 29, of Lodi, on suspicion of murder and attempted murder, police reported. Vallejo was taken into custody about 1:20 p.m. Wednesday near Highway 99 and Mariposa Road.

This is the second arrest in the homicide that occurred about 11:13 p.m. May 11 in the 700 block of West Vine Street. The victim, whose name has not been released by the San Joaquin County Coroner’s Office, was found suffering from gunshot wounds to the abdomen. He died at the scene.

On Monday, detectives arrested a 17-year-old boy from Woodbridge. The boy, whose name is being withheld because of his age, was also arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder.

He was booked into Peterson Juvenile Hall, Lodi police reported.

San Andreas 3-year-old dies after being found in neighbor's swimming pool

SAN ANDREAS — A 3-year-old boy wandered away from his home in San Andreas on Wednesday evening. He was discovered unresponsive in a neighbor’s swimming pool. Efforts to revive him were unsuccessful and he drowned, according to the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office.

The Sheriff’s Office was notified about 6:20 p.m. that the toddler was missing from his Pine Street residence. Patrol deputies, Search and Rescue personnel, California Highway Patrol officers and fire and medic units immediately responded to the area, along with citizen volunteers, according to a report.

About 6:37 p.m., the toddler was found in the swimming pool of a home on nearby Market Street. He could not be revived, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Detectives are investigating the incident and no further information was provided.
