STOCKTON — Dozens of city sidewalks damaged by tree roots will see repairs this spring.

The Stockton City Council awarded a $774,554 construction contract to FBD Vanguard Construction, Inc. to remove and replace sidewalks throughout Stockton, as well as address various curb and sidewalk issues along Harding Way.

This is the second phase of a sidewalk repair project and it’s anticipated to start in the spring and be completed by the fall.

Stockton residents regularly file requests for sidewalk repairs, which the city then evaluates and addresses based on immediate need, according to the city. Temporary repairs are made to sidewalks that are in need of immediate attention, while more permanent repairs are made as funding becomes available and are prioritizes in chronological order.

Slated for repairs this year, are 61 sidewalks all over Stockton, including Monte Diablo Avenue, West Acacia Street, East Taylor Street and Pacific Avenue. To view a list of locations, visit

According to the city, after this year’s repairs, there will be a backlog of about 600 curbs, gutters and sidewalks in needs of repairs and it will take about six years to complete.

The city maintains 760 centerline miles of street, and per the municipal code, assumes all responsibilities for repairs when city-owned and controlled trees damage sidewalks, gutters and curbs.

The sidewalk project will also include plans to replace 15 curb and sidewalk segments, and the installation of two curbs on Harding Way. According to the city, funds from the sidewalk repair project and the Harding Way Corridor project will be used to cover the costs of the contract.

The council on Tuesday also approved the addition of stop signs at a few trouble intersections.

Stockton residents have flagged Admiral Drive and Bainbridge Place, and Iris Avenue and Kiltie Way, for safety concerns because drivers fail to yield.

According to the city, there have been five crashes in the past 36 months involving drivers who didn’t yield as required. There’s been one reported crash on Kiltie Way and Iris Avenue in the same time frame.

City staff recommended changing the existing yield signs to stop signs to create two-way stops at each intersection.

Changes will also be made to Weber Avenue and Grant Street, where five crashes were reported in the past 12 months, and Weber Avenue and Aurora Street, which saw six crashes in the past year. The city will be adding a four-way stop control in those intersections.
