WEST POINT — Investigators from the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the circumstances surrounding a shooting that left a man dead early Friday morning east of West Point.

Deputies responded to reports of a shooting at 5:15 a.m. in the 2900 block of Oak Haven Lane, an isolated dead-end street off of Bald Mountain Road. Initially, they reported it to be near Wilseyville.

Deputies learned that a resident had shot a man who confronted residents outside the home and refused to leave, Sgt. Anthony Eberhardt said.

The man who was shot died at the scene, authorities said. Detectives were still trying to identify him Friday afternoon, Eberhardt said.

No arrests had been made in connection with the shooting, Eberhardt said. Detectives were trying to determine if the shooting was justified.

Eberhardt said he did not know if any of the residents of the home were injured during the confrontation with the man who was shot. He said detectives were still investigating.
